Sonia in Beijing -red carpet welcome

Chinese leadership today rolled out the red carpet for Congress President Sonia Gandhi assuring India that it attaches high importance to friendly ties between the two countries.

Gandhi, who described her visit here as a "milestone" in Sino-India relations, met Chinese President Hu Jintao, also the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), Premier Wen Jiabao and Minister of the International Department of the CPC, Wang Jiarui.

In a rare honour, 60-year-old Gandhi, who is accompanied by her son Rahul Gandhi among others, became the first foreign political leader to be received by the new Chinese leadership which emerged at the recently concluded CPC National Congress here on October 22.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi visiting China five-days

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Thursday that Indian Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi is in China for a five-day visit.

Liu said at a regular press conference that Sonia Gandhi was invited by the Communist Party of China for the visit, during which she will meet with CPC and China's state leaders.

"We attach great importance to President Sonia's China visit, which will further promote the relations between the two parties, enhance the understanding between the two peoples and push forward the friendly cooperation between the two countries," said Liu.

Besides Beijing, Sonia Gandhi will visit Xi'an, capital of northwestern Shaanxi Province, and China's economic hub of Shanghai.

Gandhi is accompanied by her son Raul Gandhi, general secretary of the congress party, as well as leaders of the Karan Singh and Prithviraj Chavan political group, and Deputy Foreign Minister Anand Sharma.

Nearly A million People Evacuated in California Wildfires

October 23, 2007, WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As fires continue to rage throughout communities in Southern California, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is swiftly mobilizing federal resources and assets in coordination with the state of California and other federal agencies. DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff and FEMA Administrator David Paulison traveled to the affected area today to meet with state officials and asses the federal response to the wildfires.
President Bush will visit California Thursday. Mike O'Sullivan reports, fire has destroyed more than 1,000 homes in San Diego, and hundreds in other parts of the state.
Fires being spread by hot, dry winds, and have burned more than 165,000 hectares from Los Angeles in north, to the Mexican border south of San Diego.

UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari concrete action about democracy in Myanmar

UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari today asked India to act with concrete action in regard to bringing about democracy in Myanmar.

Gambari, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today, said he had conveyed a message from UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon with regard to early solution to the problem in Myanmar.

"Theoretically, all of us can do more," he told reporters here when asked about his expectations from India in resolving the crisis in Myanmar.

He said he expects India to continue to encourage the authorities in Yangon to work with the United Nations to achieve the common objective of peaceful, stable and prosperous Myanmar that embarks on a national reconciliation process.

Gambari said he was "very satisfied" by India's response and stressed on the need for "qualitative results" for accelerated democratisation process.

Gorbachev forges Union of Social Democrats

Former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev founded the Union of Social Democrats in Moscow on Saturday in an attempt to lead Russia towards a social democratic path.

Some 200 people from 58 Russian regions took part in the constituent congress of the union, which was, as claimed, aimed at eliminating the extremities of left-wing and right-wing forces and building an integrated society.

"The Western countries found the solution (in combining left- wing and liberal values)," Gorbachev said, taking the coalition of Social Democrats and Christian Democrats in Germany as an example.

It's the former president and Communist Party chief's second attempt to lead his country towards a social democratic path.
