Third day ‘RabindraPranati

Today was the third day of the weeklong festival Rabindra Pranati organized by the Sangeet Natak Akdemi under the auspices of Ministry of Culture to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore at Ravindra Bhawan, New Delhi. Today’s event saw two mesmeric dance performances by Vaibhav Arekar and Kapila Venu and an expressive dance-drama choreographed and directed by Md. Belayet Hossain Khan from the Jago Art Centre, Bangladesh.

The evening began with Vaibhav Aerakar’s enthralling dance adaptation of Tagore’s poem ‘Debotaar Grash’ from Sanchaiti and the poems ‘Bir Parush’, ‘The Judge’ and ‘The End’ from The Crescent Moon. Vaibhav Arekar, an exponential Bhartnatiyam dancer brought to life the enigmatic relationship between a mother and a little boy through his performance. The performance was much appreciated by the spellbound and teary-eyed audience.

The evening featured an immaculate Kutiyattam performance by Kapila Venu as well. Kapila Venu performed on Rabindranath Tagore’s renowned story ‘Chitra’ which is based on the love tale of Arjuna and the Princes of Manipur Chitrangada from the Mahabharata. Kapila Veenu through her dance enunciated the dichotomy of Chitrangada’s character who at the same time is a fierce warrior and a tender woman in love.Both these performances were part of the ‘Katha Kavya Abhinaya’ and were staged twice at 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. at Meghdoot Theatre III.The event also boasted of a dance-drama production by one of the oldest and the most prestigious dance schools of Bangladesh the Jago Art Centre. The dance-drama ‘Samanya Kshati’ was based on Tagore’s poem by the same name. The performance was directed and choreographed by Md. Belayet Hossian Khan. It was staged at 7 p.m. at the Kamani Auditorium.

The day three of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary commemorations was much enjoyed by Tagore fans and other dance and literary enthusiasts. To quote Mr Jayant Kastuar, Secretary,Sangeet Natak Akademi, “In tune with the mood and emotions that the Rabindra Pranati has evoked, today’s dance performances too kept the audience spellbound”.

About Sangeet Natak Akademi: Sangeet Natak Akademi is India’s National Akademi of Music Dance and Drama. It is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
