CPI(M) opposes govt’s new FDI policy

CPI(M) has opposed the government's new FDI policy. The party politbureau in a statement said it would not only strengthen the grip of foreign multinationals over Indian companies but also adversely affect agriculture as farmers would be at their mercy for supply of seeds.The party has asked the UPA government not to pursue the measures which would immensely harm the country's industrial and agricultural development. Under the FDI Policy Circular, the government yesterday provided greater flexibility to Indian firms to raise overseas capital and scrapped norms that required a foreign company to obtain its domestic Joint Venture partner's approval for making investments in same field outside the joint venture.

Kuwait govt resigns, sparking fresh political crisis in Gulf emirate today, sparking a fresh political crisis in a Gulf emirate prone to such volatility over the past five years.In a step unrelated to revolts in the Arab world, it was the sixth cabinet led by Prime Minister Nasser Mohammed al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to resign since his naming five years ago, during which time three parliaments have been dissolved.State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Rudhan al-Rudhan told the country's official news agency KUNA that the Kuwaiti cabinet submitted its resignation today at an extraordinary meeting.The move comes after MPs filed petitions to question in parliament three ministers who are senior members of Kuwait's Al-Sabah ruling family over a variety of allegations including corruption and failure to perform duty.

Sehwag, Dhoni complete 1,000 ODI runs against Pakistan

Indian opener Virender Sehwag and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today completed their 1,000 runs against Pakistan in One-day Internationals during the high-octane second semi-final of the World Cup in Mohali.Sehwag hit the third ball of the semifinal off pacer Umar Gul to the cover boundary to touch the 1,000-run mark at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium.The ball was a touch too full outside off and Sehwag brought his bat down swiftly to crash the ball through the in field. Dhoni completed his 1000 runs in the 42nd over of the Indian innings, bowled by pacer Wahab Riaz.The skipper got a thick edge off Riaz on the second ball of the over, which flew past Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, hitting the fingers and bouncing out.Akmal stretched to dive but could not hold on to the ball.Two balls later, however, Riaz got the prized wicket of the Indian skipper, trapping him lbw.Dhoni tried to shuffle to his off as the ball rapped onto his pad, clearly hitting the off stump.Dhoni
