Saina reaches semis in Indonesian Open

Saina Nehwal moved a step closer to defend her Indonesian Open Super Series title as she reached the semifinals with a straight-game victory over Denmark's Tine Baun on Friday.The fourth seed Indian registered a hard-fought 21-19, 21-19 win over Tine, seeded eighth, in a match that lasted for 37 minutes.The 21-year-old Indian will now take on Chinese Taipei's Shao Chien Cheng in the semifinals on Saturday.Unseeded Shao beat seventh seed Xin Liu 21-17, 21-15 in another quarterfinal match. Saina has lost two close matches against the Dane in their previous two encounters but on Friday the world No. 4 made sure that she doesn't fall in the same trap and raised her game during crucial moments to wrest initiative. Indonesian Open Super Series Badminton: Saina reaches quarter-finals

At Jakarta on Thursday, defending champion Saina Nehwal reached the quarter-finals of the Women's Singles in the Indonesian Open Super Series Badminton tournament. The fourth-seeded Saina defeated Petya Nedelcheva of Bulgaria in straight games 21-18, 21-9 in the second round.The Indian challenge in the event is now limited to Saina, as their men's doubles and women's doubles combinations have already been eliminated. Fourth Seed Saina took just 31 minutes to dispose off Petya 21-18 21-9 and will take on the winner of eighth seed Tine Baun and Japan's Ayane Kurihara in the quarterfinal on Friday. NAC approves draft Food Security Bill

Nksagar-Sagar Media Inc:New Delhi : 22 June 2011: The National Advisory Council (NAC) on Wednesday approved the draft Food Security Bill which seeks to ensure Right to Food to the poorest of the poor in the country. NAC chairman Sonia Gandhi will be writing to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh soon on the recommendations of the Council. The Bill recommends 35 kgs of foodgrains for below poverty line household per month at subsidised rates. The historic Food Security Bill entitles 75% of country's population to highly-subsidized foodgrains. The draft Bill says two types of households are eligible for discounted grain - priority households which are below the poverty line (BPL); and general households which consist of Lower Middle Class families. Households that are in the priority category cover about 40% of the total population. These will be entitled every month to 35 kg and will pay 3 rupees per kg of rice and 2 rupees per kg of wheat. Land Acquisition amendment bill to be introduced in Monsoon session

The Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh said an amendment bill to the Land Acquisition Act would be introduced in the coming Monsoon session of Parliament. Speaking to reporters in Hyderabad on the sidelines of the International Summit on Microfinance and the Inclusive Development, the Environment Minister said the centre would oppose forcible land acquisition by the state Governments. Referring to the Posco Project proposed in Odisha, he said the state Government should adopt democratic practices to acquire land for the project. Ruling out any review over the Environmental clearance given to Posco Project, the minister said there was no need for it as the environmental clearance does not give the state, license for forcible land acquisition.

Four soldiers, 25 Taliban killed in Pak military operation

Four soldiers and 25 Taliban fighters have been killed in clashes in the restive Mohmand tribal region on Sunday, where the Pakistani security forces carried out a ground and air offensive to capture a mountain occupied by the rebels.The Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps and the Pakistan Air Force launched a joint operation on Saturday to evict terrorists from their stronghold of Walidad in Mohmand Agency, the military said. After intense fighting, the troops secured Walidad Top, a strategic mountain, and surrounding areas after killing 25 terrorists.Four soldiers were killed and eight more injured in the clashes, the military said.The remaining militants in the area "fled across the border", the military said. The ground operation was preceded by air strikes on militant bunkers and positions on Walidad mountain.Media reports said the militants attacked a check post in Baizai area of Mohmand Agency with rockets. Wild weather halts Posco land acquisition

Orissa, land acquisition for the Rs 52,000-crore Posco steel project near Paradip of Jagatsinghpur district has been stopped till Monday due to adverse weather conditions.Additional District Magistrate of Paradip, Saroj Kant Choudhury told AIR that if weather conditions were favourable on Monday, the administration would go ahead with land acquisition process in the trouble-turned Dhinkia and Gobindpur areas. Earlier this morning, land acquisition officials and a large number of security forces reached near Kujanga, even as hundreds of villagers, including school children, women and elderly people under the banner of the Posoco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), congregated at the outskirts of Gobindpur braving rain to defend forceful acquisition of their farm land for the project.
